How to choose the right Birdhouse Skateboard

Key Terms & What Affects “Feel”

Width: The deck’s width (measured across, in inches). Wider decks = more stable, harder to flip but better control, especially for larger feet / ramp riding. Narrower decks = lighter, easier for flip tricks, more manoeuvrable.

Length & Wheelbase: Length is nose to tail. Wheelbase = distance between truck pivots (or mounting holes). Longer wheelbase gives more stability (especially at speed), shorter gives flick and quicker turning.

Thickness / Ply: Most Birdhouse decks use 7-ply hard rock or Canadian maple. Sometimes there is extra tech (like “Black6) to add pop and improve durability. The ply count plus the glue / epoxy affects stiffness, weight, how poppy the deck is. A 7ply deck is pretty standard. More ply or special construction may mean slightly thicker or more durable.

Concave: How curved the deck is across the width; deeper concave helps your feet grip, better for tricks; medium are allround.

What the Differences in Boards Mean in Practice

A 7.5″ wide Birdhouse is lighter, easier to flip, good for street tricks, smaller feet.

A 8.08.25 width is pretty sweet for most riders: good balance between control, flick, stability. If you skate parks, ramps, bowls, this is very common.

Wider than 8.25″ (8.5, 9″, etc.) gives more stability, good for bowls, vert, cruising, or larger riders, but flips will feel heavier/more effort.

Thickness / ply count (usually 7) means strength & pop. Adding tech like epoxy glue or “Black6 layer adds stiffness / snap.

Longer boards / longer wheelbase = more stable at speed, but slower for street tricks and harder to turn sharply.
